Throughout every RTS (Real Time Strategy) in history there is almost always one secular goal: obtain resources and export them into an ability to kill an opponent. Games that follow this pattern range from Starcraft: Broodwar to Command & Conquer to Halo: Wars. Starcraft 2 is no different. While trying to devise a guideline for the most basic of advice for any new gamer, I have narrowed it down to 4 aspects of advantages. Each with subsets of goals. When developing a game plan and reviewing replays try to keep all these points in mind and where you had or didn't have an one or more of these advantages.

Whichever team is producing the most units and collecting the most resources will generally win. Building proper counters and scouting is only part of production; numbers play a very large role as well and can sometimes overcome even the direct counter to units. Keeping people out your base is a big effort in Starcraft. If there is a way to get in, people will find it. But your should make the double effort to keep people from building in your base. Seems like the Protoss have a new trick in that department.
