The Nomad is the replacement of the Science Vessel. Its function is the same, although it gains new features, like being able to repair ships. The Nomad can create an EMP shockwave and generate a Defensive Matrix, and can detect concealed units: invisible or burrowed.

Nano-Repair
Nomads can repair allied spacecrafts with nanites restoring 200 hitpoints. This ability will be extremely useful in quickly restoring damaged vessels for a quick response to enemy fire.

Defensive Matrix
The protective power of Nomads enables them to generate a large Defensive Matrix over a selected area. Any unit inside, friend or foe, will be protected for as long as it exists, reducing damage taken by 50%. The field can be disrupted through heavy fire or depletion with time. Strategic placement of the Defensive Matrix can be decisive to the outcome of a battle; cast over a group of Siege Tanks under fire will be best than in the melee of a front battle which could benefit the enemy as well.

E.M.P.
Nomads can create an electro-magnetic pulse which drains stored energy in a moderate area of effect around the Nomad. When used against the Protoss, it drains their shields.

Enhanced Detection
This structure has a wide detection spectrum which utilizes almost any known method of detection to reveal enemy units hidden in the fog of war. While it is a good measure to warn of approaching enemies, sensed creatures know they have been detected which betrays the location of the structure. This is why some Terran commanders have decoys built all around the battlefield to confuse the enemy.
